Our Premier Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Takes the Premier Place.

Initially, this work might appear more like an arduous academic quiz rather than a new pop project by a musician whose previous single featured an international pop icon. Split into 4 different movements and voiced in thirteen tongues, we have a head-spinning orchestral-influenced work investigating feminine mystique, religious ascent, and bodily transformation, often via the perspective of different women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is shot upwards on this record, carried by the lush presence of a full orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a long list of contributors. Its sheer audacity by itself renders the work of contemporary pop stars seem quite small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux manages to transcend overly intellectual posturing feels almost miraculous, and full praise going to Rosalía. While it's not her first project to alchemize the past and the present, the stakes feel much higher here, with the tightrope walk more precarious. What truly elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential sense of fun. Much like the iconic artist at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls you into its tornado. Even when she is tearing hearts apart, the listener nevertheless desire to stay right there through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines clearly on the stirring Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four minutes. Then, all the music falls silent, and we hear a gleeful giggle followed by a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo crashes down like cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts to the frenetic track driven by galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm with this album is that you never exactly know—nor wish to predict—where you will go next."

Almost every track concludes in a totally distinct place than where it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame with a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating into digital cacophony. Another, a song that recalls her earlier rhythmic work begins off dark and sinister, with menacing vocals, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic chorus arrive to soften the song's rough edges.

The Balance Between Art & Accessibility

A key achievement on the album is straddling the line between radical experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is little surprise that it has achieved her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy hits. A song sung primarily in English builds on a refrain that feels to collect increasingly infectious hooks while it spins skyward. This trick is repeated by another powerful ballad that expands and constricts, weaving multiple tunes as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its jaunty, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture honesty of other heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a sharp smile, like a storybook character hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant source of hidden gems that requires patience to completely explore but never seem like hard work. While other major releases of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux is a lavish feast at which the guests at it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter between discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's most endlessly creative practitioner.
